It is easy to see why some people believe that if you're looking for an easy way to improve your gut's health, just add probiotic foods to your diet

A word of caution here. Indiscriminately adding probiotics to your diet can add to your problems.

As new studies are conducted it appears that many of the claims made for using probiotics in our daily diet may not actually hold true.

Probiotic bacteria are not naturally occurring. They also do not colonize well when introduced in the body and are eliminated rather quickly. That's where prebiotics help.

Prebiotics are non-digestible foods that make their way through our digestive system and help good bacteria grow and flourish. Beneficial bacteria must constantly be introduced in the diet and fed proper food to encourage them to adhere to the intestinal wall rather than passing through the digestive tract. Therefore, in order to be effective, a prebiotic must escape digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract so that it can be released in the lower tract and used by beneficial microorganisms in the colon.

Prebiotic Foods

Prebioticsare found in plants, saliva, and breast milk. This could be a significant reason why breast-fed babies are healthier since they are naturally provided with the ingredients necessary to fight off harmful organisms and which will increase the development of beneficial ones.

Prebiotic carbohydrates are found naturally in such fruit and vegetables as bananas, berries, asparagus, garlic, wheat, oatmeal, barley (and other whole grains), flaxseed, tomatoes, Jerusalem artichoke, onions and chicory, greens (especially dandelion greens but also spinach, collard greens, chard, kale, mustard greens, and others), and legumes (lentils, kidney beans, chickpeas, navy beans, white beans, black beans).

New studies continue to increase the awareness of the benefits of prebiotics to the international consumer. In the Americas, however, the concept of prebiotics is relatively new to the marketplace. Consumers are slowly but surely becoming aware of their importance for gut integrity and their respective roles in health maintenance.

Bottom line is that we need to have more of the good bacteria in the gut compared to the bad ones to give us that overall healthy feeling. It's an ongoing battle within so take prebiotic supplements and balance your gut all year round.
